The Briefing

Posted on Wed Jan 26th, 2022 @ 1:41pm by Commander Leah Sullivan & Lieutenant Commander Gwilym Bevan & Lieutenant Kari Burke & Lieutenant Tepic & Lieutenant Nause Kallan & Lieutenant Kelvin Buchanan & Lieutenant T'reth & Lieutenant JG Vagho & Lieutenant Zema Eelri

Mission: Mission One
Location: Deck 1 - Conference Room

Deck 1 - Conference Room

Leah had called for all senior officers to attend, even though their current mission parameters could have been sent out in a ship-wide message to all staff. Her reasoning was due to the new Chief Security/Tactical Officer to the Protean, Lt. Zema. She'd only come aboard early this morning and needed to be introduced to the crew. Leah had spoken to her briefly in her ready room after being notified that Zema had finally come aboard. She seemed like a sensible officer, but a bit nervous. It could have been due to meeting a new CO, which is what Leah figured and left it at that.

"Thank you all for coming," Leah spoke. The chatter in the room stopped immediately and all eyes were on her. "Before anything else, I would like to introduce Lieutenant Zema Eelri, our new chief of security. She came from the USS Yeager, a Saber class, so she is well versed to small ships and their tactics." Leah paused a moment while Zema nodded to a few people. "Now, there will be time to get to know the Lieutenant later for each of you, but for now we'll go around the table with department status reports. Before you do, please give your name, rank, and department."

She turned to her second officer, who smiled brightly, as usual. "Lieutenant Kari Burke, Chief Conn Officer, and second officer. All systems are ready on my end, Cap," she said to Leah. "All support craft are ready and waiting your orders."

"Lieutenant junior grade Vagho," the Klingon/Human hybrid said next after a brief bit of silence. "Chief of Operations. My department has nothing to report."

Continuing down the table, "Lieutenant Tepic, Chief Engineer. Captain, all systems are operating at peak functionality. My department has found no issue with the upgrades we have received to the weapons systems, engines, or the deflector."

"The deflector was a late addition, was it not?" LCDR Bevan asked.

"That is correct. The initial upgrade according to the Vice Admiral's office was upgraded phaser arrays, one pulse phaser, and upgraded engines," Tepic replied. "However, while the upgrades were being carried out for the other systems, the Admiral approved an upgraded deflector array. The Protean is now classified as a Nova-class variant, sir."

"Thank you, Lieutenant," Bevan replied, and then looked at the next Vulcan in the room.

"Lieutenant T'reth, Chief Science Officer," she said, and then looked at Leah. "Nothing to report, although I have been speaking with Lieutenant Tepic about the Waverider."

"Oh?" Leah replied, her eyebrow cocked up.

T'reth nodded. "With the successful upgrades to the Schrödinger & Von Braun, I would like your permission to upgrade the Waverider as well."

"What did you have in mind?" Leah asked.

Instead of T'reth continuing, she turned to Tepic who spoke up. "We believe that the craft could be modified to accommodate a small warp propulsion system, which would then allow for more powerful armament, shielding, and of course, sensor arrays. Unfortunately, due to the Waverider's means of docking with Protean, many of the upgrades would have to wait until it can be launched and brought into the shuttlebay, or at our next time at a starbase."

"In the meantime, we could use the holodeck to test the theories we have," T'reth added.

"So you want to take a non-warp capable ship and make it so that it will achieve warp speed," Bevan said, "and then supe it up even more?" He turned to Leah and shrugged. "I'd like to see the plans first, but I like it."

"Agreed," Leah said. "Submit your proposal for the changes before doing so."

"Understood," Tepic and T'reth both said in unison.

"Doctor Kallan, I believe you're up," Bevan said.

Nause Kallan cleared her throat. "The supplies are all stocked, we have no patients in sickbay," she said, and then turned to the new face, "and I expect to see you this afternoon, Lt. Zema."

To her credit, the Bajoran nodded and smiled. "Not a problem, doctor." Most personnel avoid sickbay on purpose until they're ill or injured, so her response was a bit of a surprise. "Once we're underway, I'll make a point to come see you."

"That...would be spectacular," Nause said. "Thank you."

"Well, I can't let that accommodating attitude go before asking that you stop by my office as well." Lieutenant Kelvin Buchanan, the Chief Counselor, looked at Zema and smiled. "I like to have at least one session with each of the crew, just to get a read on them. After that, I'm available if you need me."

"Sounds reasonable," Zema said. "I'll stop in after my stop in sickbay." She looked up and down the table. "Ah, well, I can't speak for the security department since I just arrived this morning. My apologies, Captain."

Leah smiled briefly. "Not a problem. I spoke with Minna, and he gave me the rundown. Other than any items that you may want to change up, your department should be ready for whatever comes our way." She then tapped the desk in front of her to bring up information on the wall viewers. "While not exciting, our first mission will take us to Science Station 0812 to deliver scientific equipment. Lieutenant Vagho," she continued, "Aoife will be in charge of the supplies, and you'll need to work with Gemma as well. From what I can tell, the equipment will fill our cargo bays and filter over into the shuttlebays."

"I will make sure the preparations are taken care of," Vagho said. "When will we begin taking on the supplies?"

"1000 hours. And I'd like to be ready to go no later than 1500 hours."

"I will make it happen," Vagho replied.

Both Leah and Gwilym nodded. "Good. If there's nothing else, you're all dismissed," Sullivan said, and was relieved to see everyone stand to leave. Everyone except Bevan. Once the room was emptied, she looked at him. "Something on your mind?"

He turned to her and smiled. "I know it's just a grocery run, but I wondered if you're as excited as I am about our first mission? Yours as CO, mine as XO," he added.

She let herself smile briefly. "A bit, yes. And I am okay with, well, baby steps if you will. A simple first mission to get us going, to get our feet wet."

Bevan knocked on the wooden table. "Knock on wood, right? Simple first mission," he said. "I hope we didn't just jinx it."

"We make our own luck, Number One," Leah said, standing with Bevan following suit. "I believe Lieutenant Vagho will have everything in hand, but please check the progress on the loading of the supplies. Don't, uh, make it obvious, though. He's next in line for a promotion--still a few months out, but I want to make sure he's ready."

"Understood." With that, Bevan turned on his heels and exited the conference room and headed for his office.
